The European Youth Week took place from May 15-21. Hundreds of events, involving political debate, youth work and voluntary activities, were organized all over Europe across 33 countries.
The flashpoint of this cultural, political and social exchange was a central series of high-level events in Brussels and Antwerp, bringing together 200 young Europeans to help shape the future of the EU through workshops and debates based on the week’s focus, Structured Dialogue.
Major political figures including President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, Androulla Vassiliou, the Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and László Andor, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, attended debates with young people in Brussels and Antwerp, the designated European Youth Capital 2011.
YES Director Chiara de Caro attended the Youth on the Move strategy event, a debate with President José Manuel Barroso and Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou on the quality of higher education, the promotion of learning mobility, and how to help young people to develop their employability and entrepreneurship skills. Discussed were also the latest Eurobarometer results on youth which revealed that half of young people in Europe are keen to work abroad in another European country, but lack of cash discourages many of them from taking a first step towards this.
